Safer Trucks Need Safer Roads

Although the move to allow larger, more stable trucks on the roads is good news, ACT Transport Spokesman MP Penny Webster warned today that better highways and more passing lanes are needed to avoid an increase in accidents.

"Without trucks, New Zealand stops. Improved safety and reduced costs help everybody. But the Government must speed up improvements to our national highways and introduce more passing lanes.

"Larger trucks are safer, but other motorists will take risks if there aren't enough passing lanes, and if the roads aren't up to scratch," Mrs Webster said.
