Public must have say on MMP

National Party Leader Bill English has reaffirmed National's commitment to a referendum on MMP at the 2005 election.

"Coverage of the recent spat between Labour and the Greens has reinforced for many people the need to test public support for MMP again.

"When New Zealanders voted for MMP most expected that after trying the system they would have a chance to assess it.

"The 2005 election will be the 4th MMP election, which means New Zealanders will have had nearly a decade of experience with which to judge MMP.

"National made the commitment last year and has a private members bill to bring in a referendum.

"The electoral system is a key part of a democracy. The public, rather than politicians, should decide how they elect their representatives," said Mr English.
