In response to the allegations contained in
Nick Smith’s media release, Education Minister Trevor
Mallard said that he has never engaged in negotiations with
the PPTA, as that is the Ministry of Education’s
role.
“With regard to the reported assertion that PPTA
members would be “put on to” individual contracts, I can
confirm that as a matter of law all PPTA members will go
onto individual employment agreements as at 1 July if a
settlement has not been reached by that time. That is
something I have no power over.
"I have taken a wide range
of advice on the process to be followed should the
settlement not be ratified. A number of options are under
consideration and that does not include walking away from
the issues. My priority is to get a fair settlement – one
that values teachers and lifts the quality of education in
our secondary schools,” Trevor Mallard
said.
