Green Party Co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons has welcomed the selection of nationally respected photographer and conservationist Craig Potton as a list candidate for the party at next month's election.

Craig has published more than a dozen photographic publications, including Classic Walks of New Zealand, Tongariro - a Sacred Gift and Moment and Memory - Photography in the New Zealand Landscape.

Craig's art has received worldwide exposure through his work on the movie trilogy of Lord of the Rings, in which he shot many of the scenic backgrounds.

He has been actively involved in the conservation movement for the past 20 years. He is Deputy President of Forest and Bird and is a member of the NZ Conservation Authority.

"I am particularly keen on pushing for the creation of more marine reserves and several national parks in the high country of the South Island," Craig said. "At present I am working with others on a national park proposal for the Kaikoura Ranges.

"I bring a lot of experience at working on the ground in conservation campaigns and in the political arena to protect our natural habitats," said Craig. "I believe it is only through the Greens that we will achieve the full protection of New Zealand's native plants and animals."

"Craig has impeccable credentials in the conservation movement," said Jeanette Fitzsimons, "and I'm delighted that he has chosen to campaign for us in this election."

Both Craig and Jeanette will be at the Forest and Bird AGM at the Quality Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington tomorrow (Friday.) Jeanette will be delivering an address from 7.30pm.
