It's no wonder police are struggling to find time to take leave when police stations around the country are struggling to find frontline staff, says National's Police spokesman Tony Ryall.

"Some police are owed a huge amount of leave, but with staff shortages in most areas, they're finding it impossible to take time off. There simply aren't the people to take their place if they're away from work.

"This is a dire situation and I know the Police are seriously worried about the health implications for staff.

"National knows more police are needed and we will put 500 more on the beat over the next three years. We recognise that the Police are under considerable pressure.

"National is determined to tackle the spiralling violent crime rate with a police force that people can actually see. The presence of police on the streets makes a real difference, yet all the Government has done is slash the budget this year for foot and mobile patrols.

"It's hardly surprising people can't remember the last time they saw a police officer in their street," says Mr Ryall.
