Locke To Host Exhibition By Artist Imprisoned For Faith

Green MP Keith Locke will tomorrow (August 8) host an exhibition of traditional Chinese paintings in the ground floor Beehive Foyer.

The artist is Zhang Cui-Ying, a Chinese artist now living in Australia. In 2000 Zhang visited China and, as a Falun Gong practitioner, was imprisoned for eight months for her beliefs.

Zhang Cui-Ying will be at the launch tomorrow with an interpreter, and will be available to answer questions from the media on her art and her trials and tribulations as a Falun Gong practitioner.

Zhang has held exhibitions in other countries including Japan and Australia. Since late July her work has been exhibited in Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua.

The exhibition will be open tomorrow between 10 am and 6pm with the formal launch between 5 and 6pm. Zhang Cui-Ying intends to present art works to Keith and representatives of the Prime Minister and the Foreign Affairs Minister.
