Labour turns blind eye to Asian New Zealanders' safety

The Government must do more for crime prevention and safety amongst the Asian community, rather than leaving them to face criticism for not reporting crime, says National MP Pansy Wong.

"Asian political leaders Iike myself have worked hard to encourage crime reporting. In Rotorua and the current Auckland cases, victims have come forward to co-operate with the Police. It is a myth to say that all Asians are reluctant to report crime.

"The problem is more a lack of political leadership. It is now nearly two years since the Asian Responsiveness strategic plan was produced by Auckland City District police and Asian representatives, yet it still hasn't been implemented. The inability of Police Minister George Hawkins to make a definite commitment to this plan can no longer be tolerated.

"In Christchurch the Asian communities secured a commitment to appoint an Asian liason officer. However since the departure of John Riley as Police District Commander, the plan has been shelved.

"The Asian community has been very supportive of the Police, by way of volunteers, fund raising for police cars and the recent donations of over $16,000 to the Duncan Taylor memorial Trust. They deserve political leadership in setting up crime prevention and reporting plans," said Ms Wong.
