United Future Welcomes First Real MMP Parliament

8 August 2002

United Future Welcomes The Start Of The "First Real MMP Parliament."

United Future Leader, Hon Peter Dunne said today, at the signing of the agreement for Confidence and Supply with the Labour/Progressive Government, that this was our first real MMP Government.

" The electorate sent a very clear message this election that they were looking for a stability that has been lacking in the last two parliaments.

"We are committed to offering this stability, as a genuine centre party, for the next three years and beyond. As a party of the centre we do not carry the ideological baggage that some of the more extreme minor parties do, but rather would see us proceed more in accordance with the wishes of 70% - 80% of the voters who voted for parties gathered around the centre of the political spectrum.

"We are pleased and grateful for the goodwill expressed by both Government parties during our recent negotiations and will make every endeavour to ensure our future relationships are carried out in the same spirit.

"We would expect that, with strong leadership, we can make a positive impact for the future economic social and environmental security and health of New Zealanders and their families" Mr Dunne said.
