North Shore To Be Treeless

North Shore City Council has unwittingly created a treeless landscape for the region in years to come, ACT MP Gerry Eckhoff said today.

North Shore City Council announced today that it is formally adopting `tree protection rules' in its District Plan. The new rules, which apply to any large tree in the neighbourhood, eliminate the right of property owners to prune or cut their own trees.

"Why would anybody in their right mind plant a tree that they cannot cut down or prune as the tree becomes a liability?

"The sheer lunacy of particularly discouraging the planting of native trees beggars belief.

"People should be encouraged to plant today for the future. They will not do so under North Shore City Council's foolish policy," Mr Eckhoff said.
