Dunne on National’s puzzling foreign policy

United Future New Zealand leader, Peter Dunne, admitted today he was puzzled by the National Party’s inconsistent foreign policy declarations.

“For months, National has been castigating the Government for allegedly not doing enough to support our allies in the war against terror,” he said, “and then supported the Government when we sent troops to Afghanistan.

“Now National is calling for the return of the SAS to New Zealand, apparently because terrorism has come closer to home. Either Mr English has received up-to-date briefings from the SIS which have led him to revise his party’s policy or he is simply politicking for the sake of it.

“You can’t have it both ways. Either we deploy resources overseas to show our friends that we are pulling our weight in this war, or we hoard everything back home and hope we can fight off terrorists all by ourselves,” said Mr Dunne.

“I call on Mr English to reveal all he knows from his secret briefings that have led to this astonishing policy U-turn, or else to admit he is simply desperately seeking attention, regardless of commonsense,” he said.
