Government warned against rail investment

Government warned against rail investment

The National Party says the Labour Government‘s got no business savvy and shouldn’t risk taxpayer money on Tranz Rail shares.

“The Government’s got a completely muddled transport policy, it clearly has no direction,” says National’s Transport spokesman Roger Sowry.

“It’s likely to reduce its shareholding in Air New Zealand having put a billion dollars at risk and it’s promoting putting private money into public roads.

“Now the Government appears to be considering an injection of public money into rail.

“There’s no consistency in the Government’s transport programme.

“The National Party agrees there’s a need for an efficient rail service in this country, but the Government should be looking to impose and enforce standards, it doesn’t need to own the track,” Mr Sowry says.
