Don's Giant Leap Backwards

Media Release
29 January 2003
Don's Giant Leap Backwards

New Zealand First has described Don Brash’s latest economic recipe as a giant leap backwards to the social and economic disasters of the Labour and National governments of the 80’s and early 90’s.

Rt Hon Winston Peters said today that the former Reserve Bank governor appeared to have forgotten that he had spent many years with his foot on New Zealand’s economic throat, stifling growth more than anyone else in the history of the country.

“Don is so out of touch that he wants the unemployed to queue up outside post offices, forgetting that he and his ilk were the economic saboteurs who closed all the post offices many years ago.”

Mr Peters said that Dr Brash’s ideas would be scary if there was a remote chance that he would ever become Minister of Finance.

“He is obviously thinking out loud, which is becoming quite common in the National Party. In recent times we have seen this policy thinking result in crazy ideas bouncing around like delegates at a pogo stick riders’ convention.

“Perhaps Don is joining Gerry in the queue for Bill’s job as National seek to arrest their slide into the mist of political oblivion.”
