Give Waitangi Back To People Says Peters

Rt Hon Winston Peters and other New Zealand First MPs will attend Treaty celebrations at Waitangi tomorrow.

Those attending are Ron Mark, Brian Donnelly, Jim Peters, Pita Paraone, Bill Gudgeon, Edwin Perry, Barbara Stewart and Brent Catchpole. Mr Paraone has been in the past co-chairperson of the organising committee for the event and has been asked to do the job again this year.

Mr Peters said that February 6th 1840 was the birth date of New Zealand and that it was important to celebrate this anniversary as the major milestone in the nation’s history.

“The Treaty was a well-intentioned document, setting out rights and obligations so that two different groups of people could live and prosper peacefully alongside each other.

“We should celebrate that and be thankful for the many things that bind us together – rather than allow, yet again, the day to be grabbed by a handful who use the day to protest about our differences.

“Many other countries around the world are being torn apart by ethnic and religious violence. We must guard against that happening here,” he said.
