PC brigade delay another roading project

"Cringing political correctness threatens to delay yet another critical roading project, this time near Thames," says National Party Transport spokesman Roger Sowry.

According to reports today Ngati Whatua representatives are unhappy over the mixing of local and outside shells in new nesting beds for dotterels.

"The nesting beds, worth some $200,000 have already led to delays in the motorway project - now this new objection threatens further hold-ups," says Mr Sowry.

"Transit New Zealand's being forced to negotiate a minefield of politically correct legislation that makes provision for such things as the 'taniwha'.

"And the Land Transport Amendment Bill promises to make the situation worse, with its extra provisions for consulting Maori.

"Of course it's not just roading that's fallen foul of Maori," observes Mr Sowry.

"The PC brigade scuttled a beach project over the culturally inappropriate mixing of sand.

"And private land owners have been prevented from developing their own properties near Tauranga because of Wahi Tapu.

"Thinking New Zealanders will always run with a fair go, but when the mixing of shells holds up vital road works, most would agree that political correctness has gone too far," Mr Sowry says.
