Clark should take Tamihere seriously

National Leader Bill English is challenging Helen Clark to take her shadow Social Services Spokesperson John Tamihere seriously, after more revelations that he stands by his comments on welfare reforms.

Mr Tamihere is reported in an Auckland newspaper advocating changes to welfare, despite a slap on the hand from Helen Clark.

"This outburst shows his frustration at not being able to speak out where he sees real problems in welfare. National agrees what he has been saying is important and we want to discuss it with him," Mr English said.

"Helen Clark and Steve Maharey are wedded to dependency model that they are not listening to John Tamihere who knows destructive their policy is.

"National will change the welfare system because we don't believe dependency has to be a way of life. I hope Mr Tamihere take up my offer to discuss his ideas with us," Mr English said.
