The release of figures showing that 54
percent of Aucklanders do not feel safe on their streets at
night is more evidence that police numbers need to be
increased said New Zealand First law and order spokesperson
Ron Mark.
“With violent crime figures up by 30 percent and
people now expressing fear at the lack of safety on the
streets, what more evidence does the Government need to
increase front line police officer numbers?” asked Mr
Mark.
“Auckland streets are no safer than they were four
years ago when George Hawkins was criticising the previous
Government for lack of action over public safety.
“There
is something seriously wrong with police numbers when local
councils have to hire security guards to keep streets
safe.
“The only solution to this worrying problem is to
boost the number of police to stop violent crime.
“Every
New Zealander has the right to feel safe on their streets,”
said Mr
Mark.
