Green MPs put spotlight on PAM spray campaign

Green MPs put spotlight on Painted Apple Moth spray campaign

Green MPs on Saturday host a public meeting to hear the views of people being bombarded from above in the Government's painted apple moth spray campaign.

Green Party Health Spokesperson Sue Kedgley MP and Biosecurity Spokesperson Ian Ewen-Street MP will host the public meeting on Saturday April 5 from 5.30pm, at the Titirangi War Memorial Hall, Titirangi, West Auckland.

All media and members of the public are welcome to attend. Each MP will give a short speech of about 10 minutes, followed by a 40-minute public discussion.

The meeting, called "Where to from Here?", is an opportunity for the community to express what they would like to happen next. It will be not only about the current painted apple moth spray programme, but also about how the community believes future biosecurity incursions should be dealt with.

"The Government cannot continue to ignore the huge numbers of people suffering health problems from this spray. It has an explicit duty under the Health Act to protect public health," Ms Kedgley said.

Mr Ewen-Street said: "Until biosecurity border controls and surveillance are improved, we can expect more invasive pests in the future and more spraying of toxic chemicals - the contents of which the Government wrongly refuses to divulge."
