Coddington Welcomes Goff's Support on Registry
ACT MP Deborah Coddington today expressed her delight that Labour believes her Sex Offenders Registry Bill is a serious option to monitor sexual predators.
"I applaud Justice Minister Phil Goff for rising above party politics and agreeing to seriously examine my Bill to create a register of sex offenders. This legislation will help prevent crime and keep communities safe.
"With the report on Government agency monitoring of Jules Mikus due out tomorrow, Labour's support is timely. I firmly believe the report into Mikus will show that legislation like mine is overdue.
"I've spent a lot of time since the legislation was drawn from the Private Member's Ballot lobbying every political party to seek their support in principle for this legislation. Last week I had a very positive meeting with Phil Goff, and he indicated his support for sending my Bill to Select Committee. This may only be the first step, but it is a very important one.
"This shows ACT New Zealand can have influence in Parliament.
"The passing of this Bill would not be a `win' for any one politician or political party, but a victory for New Zealand families and a triumph for common sense," Miss Coddington said.
