Government neglect puts lives at risk

Government neglect puts lives at risk

Government neglect of a properly resourced police force is putting the lives of police officers and the public at risk, says National's Police spokesman Tony Ryall.

This follows a report today of the failed prosecution of an officer whose patrol car crashed because of neglected maintenance of the vehicle.

"This case clearly highlights the need for police resources to be well-maintained. There will always be times when police vehicles will be in pursuit and officers and the public need to know the vehicles can handle that speed safely," says Mr Ryall.

"What also concerns me about this case is that the police reportedly continued with the prosecution knowing about these vehicle defects.

"While I understand the police don't want to be seen favouring their staff, they should realise that continuing with charges that clearly wouldn't stick is a waste of valuable taxpayer dollars."
