Labour reveals agenda on pay equity

Labour reveals agenda on pay equity

Under the cover of the disastrous news about New Zealand's Free Trade deal with the US, the Labour Government's slipped another important announcement on to the agenda.

"Just a week after a budget that does nothing for economic growth, Margaret Wilson's lending weight to an idea that could have dramatic impacts on the viability of all businesses in the longer term," says National Party Industrial Relations spokesman Roger Sowry.

"She's announced the establishment of a committee on pay-equity in the public sector.

"But this is the thin end of the wedge," Mr Sowry says.

"The National Party is deeply suspicious about any 'special committee' created by the Government because Labour has a track record of appointing its Trade Union cohorts to those types of groups.

"There is no doubt that the private sector will eventually be exposed to the same discussions, but it would appear business won't get any chance to comment until a precedent is already set. "Margaret Wilson is continually looking for new ways to punish those who generate wealth and create jobs in this country, but what's worse is that she's not being up front about it," says Mr Sowry.
