No Thanks Richard Says Winston

New Zealand First has distanced itself from the so-called “grand coalition” of political parties suggested by Act leader Richard Prebble today and has described it “as a bit desperate”.

Rt Hon Winston Peters said that he could understand Mr Prebble’s wishful thinking but pointed out that most New Zealand First policies were diametrically opposed to Act’s.

“The only reason the Opposition in Parliament is now effective is because New Zealand First refuses to accept nonsense as answers to serious questions.

“Mr Prebble’s speech is another gasp of a dying political career. How often have we heard it before?

“We are a party committed to a fair society in which everyone participates but Act is a party that supports only the survival of the fittest at the expense of everyone else.

“Their only friends are at the extreme end of the business community that took New Zealanders for an expensive ride during the 1980s and early 1990s.

“Mr Prebble can ride alone on the train to oblivion. He has been on it before and knows the way.

“I’m sorry Richard but we can’t go into a coalition with a party that won’t be around after the next election. Our policy is to form the next government – and we will,” said Mr Peters.
