Labour Rips Motorists Off - Again

Labour Rips Motorists Off - Again

ACT New Zealand Leader Richard Prebble today accused the Labour Government of forcing motorists to pay for its ideological ACC scheme, in the wake of reports that petrol tax is due to increase by another three cents per litre by July 1.

"In an ACC state monopoly, costs just continue to rise. We know that in the short period of the ACC Employer Scheme being made open to competition, substantial savings were made. There is every reason to expect that savings in the motorist account would result in similar savings.

"The Government calls the increase a way to cover rising health costs for road accident victims. Labour party polling shows this is the most acceptable excuse - yet these costs are not rising significantly.

"Not only is this ACC levy increase totally unnecessary but, if ACC were open to competition, the levy would be going down, rather than up," Mr Prebble said.
