Dunne calls for roading action

United Future leader and Ohariu-Belmont MP, Peter Dunne, said today the time for planning and reviews was over and it was vital for New Zealand's major roading projects to get underway immediately.

Welcoming Transit New Zealand's $7.3 billion, 10-year plan for State highways, Mr Dunne said he was pleased that the $30 million Wellington inner city bypass has been moved up from No. 10 to No. 6 on Transit's priorities and that work is continuing on the Transmission Gully motorway project.

"I note, however, that major projects, including the Wellington bypass, are to be reviewed with final decisions made before the end of the year. It is my fervent hope that these reviews are mere formalities and not another delaying exercise demanded by those who oppose all motorways," he said.

"New Zealand has major transport infrastructure problems that are holding back our economic well-being. Fixing those problems are essential and will not be solved by the provision of more walkways and cycleways.

"United Future will give the Government all necessary support to make sure these projects go ahead as fast as possible."

Regarding the Transmission Gully project, Mr Dunne said he was pleased to see $600,000 had been set aside for planting work and the refining of cost estimates.

"The money will keep this project that's vital to the future of Wellington moving ahead," he said.
