John Key appointed Communications spokesman

National Party Leader Bill English has appointed Helensville MP John Key as the National Party's Communications spokesman.

Mr Key, a former merchant banker with wide knowledge of the business world, adds the additional role to his current responsibilities as the Party's Associate spokesman for Transport and Commerce.

"Mr Key's expertise is particularly suited to the complex Communications area," Mr English says.

Mr Key is relishing the opportunity saying he has willingly accepted the new responsibilities and he's looking forward to making contact with the businesses involved.

"The industry has been through dramatic change and there's no suggestion at all that the pace is due to slow," Mr Key says.

"I believe the Government must make sure the regulatory environment sets a platform which will allow that to continue.

"Efficient, cost effective and up to date telecommunications are vital for New Zealand to keep pace with the world.

"We are a small isolated country and the communications industry is the key that opens the door for us to take part in the global economy," Mr Key says.
