Urgent Action Needed On Housing

The Child Poverty Action Group report on the state of housing in New Zealand is a sad indictment on the Government’s lack of concern for a distressing problem, said New Zealand First family affairs spokesperson Barbara Stewart.

“It is absolutely essential that children grow-up in adequate housing if they are to have any chance at a good start in life,” said Mrs Stewart.

“With one in five families living in sub-standard conditions and some families living in caravans for up to 18 months before a state house becomes available it is time for the Government to take action and make its housing policy work.

“A systematic housing programme must be implemented for families in urgent need of housing.

“If this means reviewing people in properties that are too big for their needs, then this must be done.

“Minister Maharey needs to act now to ensure all New Zealanders, particularly children, have what is their basic right – a roof over their heads,” said Mrs Stewart.
