National Leader supports a New Zealand day
National Leader Bill English says he supports the call that New Zealand should look at a different day to celebrate the country's national day.
"New Zealanders of all backgrounds want to celebrate their citizenship of this great country. They cannot do that on Waitangi Day because it is in the stranglehold of a few people who are not proud of this country.
"I have enormous respect for Michael King's knowledge and opinion of New Zealand's history, and when someone of this stature calls for a new national day then it is time to move on.
"Waitangi Day was the day when the Maori signed up to the British Empire, but not New Zealand," Mr English said.
