Baldock: Credit Due On Road Funding

Transport Minister Paul Swain and the Government have done a good job securing an additional $47 million in funding for road engineering safety measures, United Future transport spokesman Larry Baldock said today.

"While it has got a little lost in the mix of Supreme Court and GM issues this week, lives will be saved because of this decision, and Mr Swain is to be congratulated," Mr Baldock said.

"It is an appropriate use of revenue generated from road-users.

"I believe that ultimately, the way to significantly reduce our appalling road fatality rate is to build and design better and safer roads. "This won't fix the entire road network, but it is a step in the right direction," he said.

"It is United Future's hope that the alternative funding provisions in this Land Transport Management Bill and those proposed for the amendment bill next year will also significantly contribute to the improved safety of our road network," he said.
