No Home Detention For P Offenders
No Home Detention For P Offenders
New Zealand First is calling for Home detention to be made unavailable to criminals convicted of supplying drugs.
“The decision to allow a former television newsreader to serve his sentence for peddling methamphetamine and ecstasy in the comfort of his home is worse than a slap with half a moist bus ticket,” said law and order spokesperson, Ron Mark.
“Is it because he is a so-called celebrity that he is now in the position to operate a shop from home? Or is the system telling those involved in the manufacture and distribution of the scourge of our times – pure methamphetamine (‘P’) – to go for it – if you get caught we will leave you at home to carry on your crimes.
“There is ample recent and tragic examples of how
users of this drug, suffering from dangerous psychotic
episodes, have been involved in some of New Zealand’s most
horrendously violent crimes,” said Mr Mark. “It should make
no difference whether those involved are gang members, white
collar workers, or known criminals, they should be taken out
of circulation. Home detention was meant for people found
guilty of minor crimes, not killers and class A drug
abusers. “The Government has turned home detention into a
joke and the justice system into a tragedy. They must stop
pandering to politically correct liberals – if you do the
crime, you do the time, it is quite simple,” said Mr
Mark.
