NZ decides its justice laws, not UN

New Zealand decides on its own criminal justice laws, not the UN, says former Justice Minister Tony Ryall, National's Corrections spokesman.

His comments are in response to a United Nations Human Rights Committee finding that New Zealand's preventive detention system breaches human rights.

"The Government should not cower to pressure from UN Human Rights Committee to change our preventive detention laws," says Mr Ryall

"If we want to hold people under preventive detention under our laws then we will.

"And the lecturing from the United Nations will not stop that.

"We are a sovereign country and we will make decisions as we see fit," says Mr Ryall.
