Turner puts Opposition minds to rest

It was confirmed in Parliament today that United Future and Labour have successfully negotiated amendments to the Families Commission Bill definitively removing any prospect of gangs being construed as families "by even the most fevered of Opposition MPs".

United Future's family affairs spokeswoman Judy Turner sought confirmation, "for the benefit of a few Opposition types", that the likes of gangs "never can and never will - and indeed never have - in any way been able to be construed as families".

"The only issue this House now faces with 'psychological attachment' is the ongoing psychological attachment of Opposition parties to an obtuse and cynical non-contribution to this crucial piece of legislation.

"And once they get over it, I'm sure we can all move on," Mrs Turner said.

Taking the issue up with Social Development Minister Steve Maharey during Question Time, Mrs Turner also had it confirmed that marriage was now specifically referred to in the Bill.

"Another matter that will help these previously troubled Opposition MPs to sleep well at night," she said.

"Indeed these amendments, in response in part to the select committee submitters ignored and insulted by the Opposition parties, are now such that the Opposition should come in and support the Bill, particularly as these parties have proposed no amendments themselves."
