High Court judges appointed

Attorney-General Margaret Wilson today announced the appointment of Alan Donald MacKenzie and Forrest Miller as Judges of the High Court. Both judges will sit in Wellington.

Justice MacKenzie graduated with a BA LLB from the University of Otago and an LLM (Hons) from Victoria University, Wellington. He worked at the Wellington firms of Chapman Tripp and Co and Stone Kurta & Co before becoming a partner in Stone & Co in 1971 and subsequently Rudd Watts and Stone in 1984. He remained with that firm until he started practice as a barrister sole in January 2001.

Justice MacKenzie has practiced extensively in the areas of administrative law, central banking and admiralty and generally in the commercial law area. He has been the general representative in New Zealand for Lloyd’s of London and a member of the Legal Services Board.

Justice MacKenzie contributed to “Engineering Risk” published by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand and was the author of “Building and Engineering Contracts” in the New Zealand Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents. He was an author of the titles “Nuisance” and “Money” for The Laws of New Zealand and has published various articles on international insurance, tort in the context of local authorities, and commercial litigation.

Justice Miller graduated with a BA LLB (Hons) from the University of Otago and an LLM from the University of Toronto. He initially joined the Alexandra firm of Bodkins Solicitors and then moved to Wellington in 1984 to join the firm of Chapman Tripp. He has been a partner in that firm since 1987.

Justice Miller has had a wide general practice in commercial and public law litigation, specialising in securities, regulatory and competition law. He has also been chair of the board of Chapman Tripp and chair of the Board of Unison Networks Ltd. He was counsel assisting the Commission of Inquiry into Internet and Email Services in Niue, which was set up in 2001.

Justice Miller is a contributing author to Brookers “Civil Remedies” and is the author of various articles including “Exemplary Damages in New Zealand” (published in the New Zealand Business Law Quarterly) and “Predatory Pricing in Deregulated Telecommunications Markets” (Published in World Competition).
