Dunne questions US double standards
United Future leader, Peter Dunne, who chairs Parliament’s foreign affairs select committee, today queried the motives of the United States administration in its differing attitudes towards Iraq and China.
The Bush administration has taken the opportunity of a visit to the US by China’s Premier to issue a warning to Taiwan not to try to achieve its independence from the mainland.
“Isn't there a double standard in the US being perfectly happy to get rid of Saddam Hussein to make Iraq a democracy, but when it comes to Taiwan - which is already a democracy - being too scared to stand up to totalitarian China?” he said.
“Or is it a case of Iraq's oil and China's economic
potential looking equally attractive, so principles become
just another tradeable commodity?”
