ACT Welcomes National Call For Seabed Debate

ACT Welcomes National Call For Seabed Debate

ACT New Zealand Deputy Leader Ken Shirley today lent his support to National Deputy Leader Gerry Brownlee's proposal to forego any adjournment debate in favour of a debate over the foreshore and seabed issue.

"If the Labour Government will not allow debate on this issue before Parliament rises for the Christmas break, then we should forego any adjournment debate to give time to the foreshore and seabed issue.

"The adjournment debate is important, as it is Parliament's last opportunity to reflect on the year, and to debate important outstanding political issues. The Labour Government, however, is arrogantly by-passing Parliament and attempting to dump its outrageous policies on the public - in the hope that they will be obscured in the pre-Christmas rush.

"The seabed and foreshore important issue will impact on all New Zealanders, Maori and non-Maori alike. Labour has made it clear that it will result only in more laws based on race. This is totally unacceptable in a civilised society," Mr Shirley said.
