Dunne deplores National’s lack of vision

United Future leader Peter Dunne today deplored the National Party’s lack of vision and utter inability to provide leadership for New Zealand.

“National’s leader, Dr Don Brash, claims a Royal Commission of Inquiry into New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements – such as United Future has proposed – is merely the Labour Government’s cunning plan to pass the buck on the foreshore and seabed debate until after the next election,” he said.

“This is either madness or an extreme poverty of vision. If Dr Brash cannot, or will not, distinguish between an issue of immediate concern and an inquiry into how New Zealand governs itself for the next few centuries, then he doesn’t deserve to call himself a potential candidate for the leadership of this country .

“I have been calling for an inquiry into New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements since 1994, shortly after I left the Labour Party and long before the foreshore and seabed debate.

“As Dr Brash has noted, Governments are elected to govern in the national interest and that means the interests of New Zealand, not the very much smaller interests of the National Party,” said Mr Dunne.
