A King Among Men

A King Among Men

Wednesday 31 Mar 2004 Heather Roy

ACT New Zealand Arts, Culture & Heritage Spokesman Heather Roy today expressed her sorrow over the recent death of acclaimed New Zealand literary giant Dr Michael King who, along with his wife, died tragically in a car accident near Maramarua yesterday.

"Widely regarded as the country's premier biographer and historian, Dr King's contribution to New Zealand literature was invaluable," Mrs Roy said.

"Dr King's works - which included books on Dame Whina Cooper, Te Puea, and the Janet Frame biography `Wrestling with the Angel' - provided food for thought, and changed many widespread views on the history and attitude of New Zealand.

"The country will be all the poorer for Dr King's death. New Zealand has lost one of its truly talented, gifted sons," Mrs Roy said.
