Turia Party chooses cannabis lobby over Maori interests

Te Tai Hauauru Tariana Turia today said she supports decriminalisation of cannabis.

But by promoting the arguments of the pro-cannabis lobby, she is acting contrary to the demands of Maori communities demanding that the coalition take a hard line on cannabis and other harmful drugs.

"Young people deserve to be told the truth, even if it isn't what they want to hear. Young people need to know that illegal drugs are not an acceptable or attractive lifestyle choice and that misuse of drugs as a young person can severely hurt your life and job chances later in life," Matt Robson said.

Matt Robson said the news that the New Maori Party had adopted a muddled position on drugs highlighted again why the Progressive Party needs to be inside the coalition government ‘keeping Labour's feet firmly on the ground.’
