Alexander: Attempted murders from Corrections' insanity

United Future's Marc Alexander said some of his worst fears had been confirmed with the revelation today that a paroled criminal placed in a youth hostel had last year attempted to murder two backpackers.

Mr Alexander this week revealed that the Corrections Department was placing some parolees in backpacker accommodation, and it was reported in the media this morning that Arthur Alexander Gray, while on parole in a Nelson hostel, attempted to murder the backpackers.

"I completely understand why the owners of these hostels are up in arms that they have been turned into dumping grounds for clearly often unreformed criminals.

"The Corrections Department's role in this has been disgraceful and utterly irresponsible," Mr Alexander, United Future's law and order spokesman, said.

"What sane person, let alone semi-competent bureaucrat, ever dreamed for one moment that this was an appropriate way to house criminals?" Mr Alexander asked.

"And why is the taxpayer funding this accommodation full stop?"

"And finally, would they please explain the absolute disregard they are showing for the well-being of New Zealanders and visitors to this country," Mr Alexander said.
