Ogilvy: $9.5m for Net needs good start
A Government decision to put $9.5 million into firewalls for school computers was long overdue and should be followed with a co-ordinated reporting system for offences, United Future education spokesman Bernie Ogilvy said today.
Just last week, Mr Ogilvy challenged the Government to start meeting its obligation to support schools' IT requirements with more than just supplying hardware.
"So I think the Government should be congratulated for finally beginning to address this issue with the announcement of the $9.5 million investment in firewalls and hacker protection," he said.
"But the whole issue needs to be taken more seriously, and the next step is clearly setting up a centralised system for addressing offending on and improper use of school computers.
"This really is about creating a safe learning environment for the nation's young people," Mr Ogilvy said.
