Maori Must Move On Meningitis Vaccinations

New Zealand First is calling on Maori health providers to spread the word about the Meningococcal B immunisation programme.

“The immunisation campaign which started in July in the Counties Manukau region has been deemed a success so far, but the message doesn’t seem to be reaching all Maori parents,” said Maori affairs spokesperson Pita Paraone.

“Maori uptake has been lower than that of other ethnic groups, and that may be because they’re unaware of the free programme.

“It’s vital that parents understand the importance of getting their children vaccinated, and now is the time for Maori health providers to prove their effectiveness at reaching their communities.

“Maori involvement in the provision of health services was designed to better meet the needs of tangata whenua. There is a strong need right now for higher participation by Maori in this campaign.

“It’s a monumental task to vaccinate every child and young person in New Zealand, but it’s achievable, and it’s crucial that no child misses out,” said Mr Paraone.
