Statement by John Tamihere

“I have today offered the Prime Minister my resignation from Cabinet. While I am confident that the independent investigations that are currently taking place will clear me of any wrongdoing, I believe it is in the best interests of my family, the government and my constituents, for me to stand down at this time,” said Mr Tamihere.

“I believe I owe it to my constituents to be able to engage fully as their elected representative. This includes being able to actively participate in the House. My current status as a Minister on leave does not allow this.”

“I look forward to playing an active role in progressing the government’s programme both in the House and the community. That would not be possible if I remain in a limbo.”

“I am gratified that the Prime Minister has indicated that the position I occupied in Cabinet will remain vacant.” Mr Tamihere concluded.
