War against future poverty in old age

Friday 26 November 2004

Hon Jim Anderton MP, Progressive Leader

National signs up to war against future poverty in old age

The National Party's correct decision to sign-up to pre-funding part of the future costs of National Superannuation is good news for future retirees, says Progressive leader Jim Anderton.

"I warmly congratulate the National Party.

"All serious Parliamentary parties are now committed to putting away some money today so that we can protect future retirees against the indignity of poverty in old age," Jim Anderton said.

"We all know that the demographics of New Zealand are changing. I believe it is a great victory for commonsense, compassion and MMP politics that all serious political parties are prepared to put their hand up for future generations by saying that the New Zealand Parliament will do all it can today to protect future generations' dignity in retirement," the Progressive leader said.

Only the ACT and Green parties still propose to dismantle the New Zealand Superannuation Fund, established by the current coalition government.
