Civil Union Bill Should Go To A Referendum - New Zealand First

New Zealand First MPs have unanimously agreed the Civil Union Bill should be put to a referendum.

List MP Brian Donnelly has filed a Supplementary Order Paper to amend the Civil Union Bill enabling a referendum to be held on the Bill with the general election in 2005.

New Zealand First justice spokesperson Dail Jones said the party’s policy was to support referenda.

“In view of the considerable interest shown by all sides of this debate, Brian Donnelly’s suggestion is the way to resolve this contentious issue. If both sides believe they have a majority support for their views, then they should support a referendum.

“We have been inundated by emails from Christian ministers supporting the Civil Union Bill. We now look forward to their emails supporting a referendum, which should resolve the issue once and for all.”

Mr Jones concluded by saying that he was encouraged by the support expressed by the National Party Leader Don Brash for a referendum.
