Land access concerns for city dwellers


Ilam MP, Gerry Brownlee, says urban property owners who have waterways on their properties could soon have members of the public wandering onto their land.

“And they will be completely within the bounds of the law,” he says.

“The Government’s proposed law change gives anyone the right to walk along waterways, irrespective of who owns the land,” says Mr Brownlee.

“Farmers have big concerns over this but urban property owners should also be worried.”

In answer to a Parliamentary Question, the Minister responsible confirmed that Ilam residents may be affected by the law change.

“There are a number of creeks and streams in the Ilam electorate, and people with these running through their property should not take this lying down,” says Mr Brownlee.

“Labour’s lack of regard for property rights jeopardises safety and privacy and will impact on property prices”.
