‘Pause’ For Law Okay – PSA

The PSA, the union covering parliamentary service workers, said a good deal of positive work around the new Employment Relations Act had been, and was being, done at Parliamentary Services.

‘And that is as it should be,’ PSA organiser Val Taylor said.

‘The PSA has been jointly involved in all this and we are satisfied with the approach taken, including the “pause” on hiring for any, as yet unknown, vacancies for a few weeks,’ she said.

‘We have agreed on the detail of the information on the new law going to staff – who, after all, are our members – and about the way we are going to operate under the ERA to get a better and fairer deal for everyone.

‘The decision to briefly hold from hiring while all this is put in place seems to me to be a fair response.

‘It is only right and correct that management take the time to make sure they inform, train and involve all their employees,’ Taylor said.

Indeed any ‘concern and chaos’ over the introduction of the ERA appears to rest with the ACT leader Richard Prebble, rather than with either the staff or management at Parliamentary Services, the PSA said today.
