Colonel Franken-Sanders and Chickens call on KFC to go GE free
Wellington Monday 15 January 2001 – Today Greenpeace
chickens and Colonel Franken-Sanders revealed to midday
shoppers in central Wellington that Kentucky Fried Chicken
(NZ) Limited uses chickens fed on genetically engineered
animal feed.
A local KFC restaurant in Manners Mall
was the scene for a giant red “KGE bucket”, Greenpeace
activists from the Rainbow Warrior dressed as chickens and
a Colonel Franken Sanders. The activists hung a banner
across the entrance to the restaurant and handed out “KGE”
postcards that demanded KFC (NZ) Limited make a GE free
commitment.
KFC (NZ) Ltd is supplied with Tegel
chickens which are fed animal feed made with genetically
engineered soya meal. “By using Tegel chickens, KFC is
allowing genetically engineered soya meal to enter our food
chain,” said Annette Cotter, Greenpeace campaigner. “Sixty
nine percent of New Zealanders in total are concerned about
this11 TV3/CMR Insight Poll, surveyed 1000 New Zealanders
about genetically engineered soya meal in animal feed fed to
pigs and poultry. and KFC needs to be aware of consumer
rejection.”
Genetically engineered soya beans are
grown in the United States and processed into soya meal
that is exported to New Zealand. On the 27 December 2000,
Greenpeace protested against a shipment of soya meal from
the United States, likely to be genetically engineered.
“The growing of genetically engineered crops in the
environment is a new and untested technology that we do not
know the long term effects,” said Cotter. “If KFC makes a
commitment to go GE free the demand for genetically
engineered soy will diminish and the United States will be
forced to grow GE free soy.”
The Rainbow Warrior arrived in Wellington on January 11 to campaign for a GE free future. It will set sail for Christchurch tomorrow Tuesday January 16.
