Belgium Sees Cannabis Sense

Jean Claude van Damme’s hometown has begun to recognise that the War on Drugs is a failure, and decriminalised cannabis use. "Good on Belgium!" says Libertarianz Leader Peter Cresswell about this small advance in individual liberty. "This decision allows people to make their own decisions about their own lives, and stops making criminals of them for doing so."

The Belgian cabinet has agreed to make it legal to possess, grow and use cannabis, but not to buy or sell it. Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt says: "This is a policy that is being followed in many of the countries in the European Union."

"It is however a great pity they haven’t seen the full logic of their own position and legalised the stuff," says Cresswell, who points out that it is nobody’s business but the cannabis user’s whether he uses the stuff or not. "It is nonetheless a step in the right direction."

"It is long past time," says Cresswell, "that the New Zealand government take this lesson and stop their own War on Drugsä in this country. Let’s stop making criminals of this country’s innocent; let’s allow our police to get on with solving crimes with real victims; and let’s have an amnesty so we can empty the jails of people who have never hurt anyone else."
