Can We Have Our Children Back Now?

Libertarianz spokesman for education deregulation Warrick Brown said he was "flabbergasted at Muriel Newman’s support for an increase in state control over education, and the abdication of parental responsibility. It appears that Ms Newman is happy with NZ’s schools being child minders or state nannies."

Ms Newman claims that a longer school day would assist children to succeed if some extra time was "devoted to home work and coaching." "Her ‘solution’ is to remove parental responsibility altogether, in which she has now joined all the other socialists who call for Nanny State to take control of their lives," said Brown. He added " for children, it is not the length of time spent in at school, but the quality of it while there that matters most. The current substandard quality is a direct outcome of a 70-year-old experiment in compulsory education that has abundantly demonstrated it is failing students, their parents, and this country. It is a failed experiment, and in desperate need of change," says Brown.

"This change must be based on a philosophy giving parents back their children. Attempting to ‘fine tune’ this failing experiment will not cure the failure – it is endemic. The only way to ensure quality education is to remove the state completely from curriculum, control, and delivery, and emphatically not to advocate more control, as Ms Newman does."

"Act sometimes claims to be pro-freedom, but in fact continues to promote state control and intervention. If they were true to their stated beliefs then they would join the Libertarianz party in calling for the complete removal of all state control and interference in education and hence pave the way for real choice, real competition and real quality" said Brown.

The Libertarianz party is the only party that actually follows their stated principles, one of which is freedom of choice and association. Compulsory state education - which is clearly supported by ACT - is in clear violation of these principles. Libertarianz believes that education should be totally free from state control, interference and manipulation.

"Let’s give parents back their children," concludes Brown.
