Thursday 1 March 2001 Auckland - Greenpeace welcomes Restaurant Brands New Zealand Limited (1) announcement in its 2000 Annual Report that it will be working with its suppliers to eliminate any remaining genetically engineered material from all its ingredients and animal feed by 1 December 2001.
“This is a major coup for consumers of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, and Starbucks, who want to eat GE free food,” said Annette Cotter, Greenpeace campaigner.
In Restaurant Brands Annual Report, Chief Executive Jim Collier revealed that the company has been working in collaboration with its many suppliers to eliminate GE ingredients from its products and animal feed used by its suppliers. Restaurant Brands is working towards the elimination of GE material from its ingredients by 1 December ahead of mandatory labelling of packaged food by ANZFA on 7 December 2001.
“Restaurant Brands has obviously listened to its consumers and noted the growing trend of companies in Europe going GE free. We would also like to see Tegel NZ Limited to make a similar commitment and source GE free soya meal for its animal feed,” said Cotter.
Over the last couple of months Greenpeace has been campaigning for KFC and Tegel to go GE free as part of the Rainbow Warrior, GE free future tour.
