Federated Farmers Welcomes Single Food Agency
Federated Farmers' Vice President Tom Lambie has welcomed the announcement that Government will set up a new Food Administration Agency to control food safety standards and food exports.
"This is excellent news. There is no doubt that a single Food Administration Agency will enhance New Zealand's food safety and biosecurity. The Government must be congratulated," said Mr Lambie.
"A single, stand alone food authority will provide a seamless, overarching approach to food safety."
"The current system where the Ministry of Health looks after domestic food issues while the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry deals with export food issues has meant that there have been gaps in the system."
"Also, the fact that the Authority will have its own Minister, budget, policy staff and advisory board will ensure that both consumer and industry concerns are heard," concluded Mr Lambie.
