A series or advertisements promoting a referendum on MMP has appeared in major metropolitan newspapers today.

Stuart Marshall (30), an Auckland economist has launched a Citizens Initiated Referendum with the following question being approved by the Clark of the House:

“Should a binding referendum be held to decide the future voting system, based on a parliament of 99 MP’s?”

Currently a parliamentary select committee is reviewing MMP, which is expected to bring down a report in favour of the current system.

“The people should decide the future of the electoral system, not the politicians. This is what my campaign is about.” Said Mr Marshall.

“Furthermore, the Parliament should honour the decision made by the people at the last election to reduce the size of Parliament to 99 MP’s. 82% of voters wanted a reduction, but to date they have been ignored”. Said Mr Marshall.

“This campaign is not about returning to FPP but a system with a lot fewer list MP’s. That’s what the research undertaken by the parliamentary select committee reveals. 76% of the people want a referendum on the voting system. That’s what my campaign is all about – allowing the people to have their say and be heard”. Said Mr Marshall.

Mr Marshall is on a tour of the South Island this week gathering support for his campaign.
